Clement Payne came alive again yesterday when actor Andrew Pilgrim gave a stirring re-enactment of the national hero’s memorable speech Agitate, Advocate, But Don’t Violate.
Pilgrim’s performance was at Independence Square, a stone’s throw from Golden Square, the City, where Payne’s fiery oratory is credited for sparking the 1937 riots, which in turn led to needed social change in Barbados.
At the end of the speech at the commemoration of that watershed moment in Barbadian history 75 years ago, Pilgrim received rapturous applause from the audience that included Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, Cabinet Minister Stephen Lashley and Chief Justice Marston Gibson.
