UNICEF representative for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Jean Gough said the programme entitled Xchange will help protect children from harm, violence and all forms of abuse.
"Xchange is a movement against violence where we will be encouraging adults
as well as children, youth and adolescents to commit to fostering positive environments for children that will lead to the reduction in violence faced and even committed by children and young people," Gough said.
She was speaking to those gathered in Heroes' Square yesterday after the Child Month March organised by the Child Care Board.
Gough urged members of the public to commit themselves to the Xchange programme and to tell children the truth about their rights.
The UNICEF representative commended Barbados for doing an excellent job in providing for the basic needs of children.
She lauded Government for providing an excellent health care system, education and other social services for the island's children, and added that Barbados' services for children were some of the best in the world and could be compared to any of the developed countries.
She pleaded with Barbadians to ensure that their children reach their fullest potential.
She urged them not to keep silent about child abuse and to create an environment of listening and dialogue with the children.
