Commandant: Time for new RPTC focus

THE REGIONAL POLICE TRAINING CENTRE (RPTC) at Seawell is "inadequate" for present and future training needs.

Commandant Mark Thompson said last Wednesday at the 126th Passing Out Parade that a business plan, looking at the complete development of the physical infrastructure of the Christ Church facility, should soon be in the hands of authorities.

The centre, described as "a dynamic training institution" by Thompson, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

He said that in their view, the "key to unlocking the productive potential" of the officers who passed through it was "a continued revolution" in education and training.

"Our programme has been skewed towards building capacity to deal with any crime and security challenges that may arise because of the voluntary movement of Caribbean nationals as a result of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, the voluntary movement of persons from all nations due to Cricket World Cup and the forced movement of Caribbean people because of natural disasters.

"The highest priority was given to Cricket World Cup preparations," he said.
