Foundation shake up Chargers

CHRIST CHURCH FOUNDATION made a fairy tale start to their Division 1 volleyball career when the Cooperators General Insurance knockouts were served off on Monday night at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.

The newcomers to top flight volleyball came from a set down to stun former champions British American Insurance Chargers 17-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-22. In spite of boasting a line-up of national players Alain London and Rommel Agard, along with a number of former Barbados juniors, Foundation were hardly expected to press the top-rated Chargers.

The presence of coach/setter Fernando Skeete in the starting six for Foundation suggested a team looking for a drubbing, as Skeete would have entered Division 1 with Erdiston Rockets in 1986, some years before any of his Foundation teammates would have entered this life.

However, recognising the failure of his attackers to link with his setting, Skeete passed the role to London, who then ignited the quiet terminator, Jason Alleyne, and Adian Cobham to launch an attack which Chargers could not reply to.

Cobham had turned out for Progressive last year and on Monday night he was brought off the bench to demonstrate that his all-round skills could help Foundation to surprise many teams this season. The acquisition of former Barbados libero Sylvester Ward from Erdiston Rockets provided Foundation with passing and defence depths in the upset victory.

Nate Williams arrived in the island during the match and he rushed to the Gym minus his fireman outfit to help douse any hopes Chargers might have had of teaching Foundation any volleyball lessons.

Up on Court A, the kings RBTT Deacons showed Chargers what was royal volleyball as they dismissed Berger Paints Friendly Hall in straight sets, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23. At game time only regulars Hudson Griffith and Gregory Gill were on court for Friendly Hall, who were made up of new acquisitions from Progressive and the Rockets.
