BRIAN LARA appears set to make an imminent return to the limelight and West Indies could be among his first opponents.
As reports surfaced that Lara was being recruited to take part in the Hong Kong Sixes for an All-Star team at the end of the month, it has emerged that a West Indies team could also be competing in the tournament.
Agence France-Presse, a leading news agency in France, reported yesterday that Lara and fellow superstar Shane Warne of Australia were confirmed to play in the fast-paced, exciting tournament that is set for October 27 and 28 at the Kowloon Cricket Club.
Organisers listed West Indies among the ten participating teams, but while a West Indies Cricket Board official yesterday confirmed receipt of an invitation, the governing body had not yet indicated their participation.
If the West Indies play in the tournament, they will be in the Sir Garfield Sobers group which includes the All-Stars team, along with Australia and South Africa.
In addition to Lara and Warne, officials are also targeting the Indian pair of Virender Sehwag and Anil Kumble, along with former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak for the All-Star team.
Clive Howard, chairman of the Hong Kong Cricket Association, said organisers were now focused on raising the Hong Kong Sixes to another level.
"With the addition of the All-Star Team in 2007 we have shown the tournament organisers' commitment to developing this event into a world-class cricketing weekend. We will continue to welcome some of the biggest names in the game to one of the world's most dynamic and exciting cities," Howard said.
"This action will be seen across the globe through our new television partnerships, which is not only great news for the fans that will catch the big hitting, but also a great promotion for Hong Kong as well."
The Hong Sixes, which first started in 1992, comprises teams of six players contesting five-over-a-side matches and the top prize is US$100 000.
West Indies, winners of the 1996 tournament, made a return to the competition in 2005 after a few years' absence.
Last year's team comprised captain Sylvester Joseph, big-hitters Dwayne Smith and Esuan Crandon, batsmen Narsingh Deonarine and Tonito Willet, both of whom are capable of bowling, all-rounder Darren Sammy and wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh.
If the WICB accepts the invitation, those selected will miss the semi-finals and final of the regional KFC Cup limited-overs competition which will be played at the 3Ws Oval on October 25, 26 and 28.
