PLEASE don't try to "privatise" God!

The People's Empowerment Party (PEP) made this appeal to new Prime Minister David Thompson yesterday as it brought the curtain down on its general election campaign.

The party was reacting to Thompson's comment, during his address to the nation Sunday night, that he was convinced "the hand of God" was in the recent "historical developments".

PEP leader David Comissiong told the DAILY NATION at the start of a thank-you motorcade from Howard's Supermarket in Bush Hall, St Michael that the Prime Minister was on dangerous ground.

"This is a development we would like to deprecate and we would like to warn all political leaders about the dangers of what we call the privatisation of God," he said.

"God is not on the side of any particular political party, of any particular government. God belongs to all of the people of Barbados . . . . "I think that a political leader is on very dangerous ground when he seeks to appropriate God to his particular political party or to suggest that God willed a result that favoured his political party."

Comissiong also questioned the new ministerial portfolios announced by Thompson.

"Some of the delineation of ministries is a bit peculiar. Take for example, Family, Youth Affairs, Sports and the Environment,"he said. "Some of them don't seem very logical."

He also said it was "striking" that the Prime Minister named three ministers "to assist him" and picked them from outside the Democratic Labour Party group which had contested the election.

Comissiong wondered aloud if this reflected a "lack of self-confidence" by Thompson and a lack of confidence in his election candidates.

He also questionedthe omission of St Lucy Member of Parliament Denis Kellman from the Cabinet, given his "long track record of struggle in Opposition".

But he welcomed Thompson's announcement of discussions with Dominica about giving Barbadians a cheaper source of fruits and vegetables.

"That is a welcomed development," he stated.
