Developer falls into hot lagoon

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada – British millionaire developer Peter DeSavory has sought to allay the fears of Grenadians who have expressed concern about his plans to build cottages along the waterfront in the capital.

DeSavory has insisted that only a small area of the lagoon will be used to construct the cottages which are part of a multi million-dollar marina project that also includes a five-star hotel and residential areas.

He was responding to objections by the pressure group Citizens In Defence Of Grenada's Lands And Heritage. The group said the project would interfere with the aesthetics of the area and obstruct the view to the scenic Caribbean Sea from the St George's lagoon.

No intention

"There is no intention to put a load of development on the lagoon edge; not at all. There is a small area of the lagoon edge that will have some limited development on it which would not obstruct the views, which will enhance the attractiveness of the lagoon's edge and which will make it much nicer for local people and visitors," DeSavory said on Monday.

The developer, who appeared frustrated at times during the news conference where he made the comments, was later dismissive about the criticism.

"Furthermore, I am not even going to worry about it today and I am fed up with talking about it. You help me find US$120 million to build this damn hotel. I am not discussing it any more," DeSavory said.

Police tore down protest banners erected by the group on DeSavory's property.

"DeSavory already has Ballast Ground, he has Islander Butler Gap, he has the lagoon for 99 years and he has tax concessions for 25 years and he wants the Lagoon Park as well?" protested spokesperson Sandra Ferguson.

"What is left for Grenadian people? There are a number of concerns but our principal concern is no cottages on the Lagoon Park."

The group has been circulating a petition seeking support for its cause. (CMC)
