Pinelands brings Banja
Published on: 5/9/08.

IN THE 1960s calypso was known as "banja" and "devil music" and many parents were opposed to it.

Sing de Banja, a multimedia production being staged by Pinelands Creative Workshop, takes a look at those times and examines the impact "banja" has had on Barbados' socialisation.

It questions whether, indeed, much has really changed, despite all the island's development.

Each scene looks at a different aspect of society – school, home, rum shop – and looks at the relationships among families, friends, teachers and pupils.

The production, which takes place May 24 and 25 at Parkinson Memorial Secondary School at 7 p.m., features the works of early calypso singers Viper, Herring, Sir Don, De Dove, Mike Wilkinson, Gabby, Romeo, Devil, Lord Wilson, The Merrymen and Grynner, among others.

Also featured is the work of people who helped further the calypsonians' cause, like former Director of Culture Nigel Harper and Julian Marryshow.
