Ending to air traffic saga expected soon

THE CHALLENGES facing air traffic controllers that caused them to sick-out last weekend could soon be resolved.

After a meeting on Sunday, and another Tuesday with the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), air traffic management and officials of the Ministry of the Civil Service, NUPW general secretary Dennis Clarke said the union was satisfied with the way in which the discussions were going.

More than 30 controllers who are employed at the Grantley Adams International Airport returned to work late Sunday so that the NUPW could handle their grievances, some dating as far back as 2000.

Clarke said the union and the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Civil Service had engaged in cordial and fruitful talks for more than three hours at the last meeting, adding there were two other matters left to be settled.

There are also another five matters on the agenda, but these relate to ministerial and departmental issues that also have to be resolved.

Clarke said at that level, the matters should be easily resolved since the process was much faster than when dealing with the Ministry of Civil Service, where you would have to consult the minister and others who would then have to approve whatever decisions were made. (CT)
