A SOMEWHAT DEPLETED Trinidad and Tobago team were still able to restrict defending champions Guyana to 227 all out on the first day of their TCL Group Under-19 Challenge match at Lester Vaughan Secondary School Ground yesterday.

Trinidad and Tobago were without six of their original players, including their leading leg-spinner and batsman Yannic Cariah, who were apparently sent home earlier in the day because of disciplinary reasons.

The eight players from the original squad who played yesterday were captain Adrian Barath, Evin Lewis, Kjorn Ottey, Akiel Cooper, Aaron Alfred, Omesh Ramoutar, Sheldon Dogan and Hakim Mitchell.

Drafted in

Three of the new players who were drafted into the starting XI were Yannick Ottley, Nicholas Alexis and Rixon Maniram.

They represented the triumphant Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 team in Tuesday's final of the Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools' Competition against The Lodge School at Kensington Oval.

After captain Barath won the toss and decided to put Guyana in to bat on a good pitch, he used his limited resources to telling effect, as the Guyanese slipped from 150 for four to 227 all out.

Openers Aaron Fredericks and Trevor Griffith gave their team a solid start with an opening stand of 43, before Fredericks was caught behind by wicketkeeper Rixon Maniram off spinner Omeshwar Ramoutar for 14.

Attractive strokes

Griffith, the eventual topscorer with 48, including seven fours, played some attractive strokes during his knock before he was also dismissed by Ramoutar.

Left-arm spinner Yannick Ottley, one of the three debutants, was then introduced into the attack, and along with his brother, Kjorn, combined to destroy the Guyana middle order.

Only wicketkeeper/batsman Anthony Bramble, with 41 in the lower order, was able to keep out the rampant Trinidadian spinners.

By the close Trinidad and Tobago had reached 22 without loss.
