WORLD octathalon gold medallist Shane Brathwaite took things easy at the Powerade-sponsored St James Seconday Inter-House School Sports yesterday, but still shattered the 100 metres record when he was hand-timed at a sizzling 10.6 seconds.

The 18-year-old Brathwaite also won the 200 metres in 22.48 seconds from the school's two Division 1 cricketers Trevor Ifill and Athelbert Brathwaite, who won the high jump.

Whereas Shane Brathwaite helped Green House to championship honours with 653 points, Ifill, also a CARIFTA Games athlete, had the satisfaction of capturing the Victor Ludorum title with 51 points. But his house, Blue, had to settle for second position on 573 points, ahead of Yellow (514) and Red (423).

The muscular Ifill flexed his muscles in the javelin with a big throw of 56.60 metres, put the shot 11.34 metres and tossed the 2-kilogramme discus a record distance of 34.90 metres.

Shane Brathwaite, second behind Ifill in both the shot and javelin, did not extend himself throughout the meet, only competing in the long jump, which he won with a leap of 6.45 metres and the relays.

"I am trying not to push myself too hard on the grass and get injured because I have the Junior Nationals next week, the Inter School Sports and CARIFTA coming up," he said.

The versatile athlete said he would probably compete in the five-event pentathlon, 110-metre hurdles and the sprints at the upcoming Barbados Secondary Schools Championships, which are scheduled for the National Stadium.

"I've improved in the javelin and discus and all the track events but I am working more on speed for the hurdles and long jump. Probably after CARIFTA, I would put in a couple of 400 metres," he said.

Sharifa Maynard of Green House was the Victrix Ludorum, earning 59 points, the most by any athlete. Competing in the Girls' Under-17 Division, she won the 400, 1 500 metres and high jump.

Matthew Griffith (Green) was the fastest Under-17 boy, speeding to comfortable victories in the 100 and 200 metres (25.04) and leaving Kadeem Arthur (Red) in his wake. Griffith also showcased his strength, putting the shot 11.83 metres and tossing the discus 35.45 metres. His housemate Judson Jack won the high jump (1.60m) and long jump (5.95m) while Curtis Marshall (Red) triumphed in the javelin (36.50m).

Whereas Maynard displayed her running ability among the Under-17 girls, Red House's Shamelia Connell was unstoppable in the field events, triumphing in the discus, long jump, shot put and javelin.

Davon Lewis (Blue) won the long and high jump in the Boys' Under-15 division.

There were wins for Shareka Joseph (Red) in the long jump; Tishonna Springer (Yellow) in the high jump; Davida Holder-O'neal (Blue) in the 400 metres and Marisha Pierre (Red) in the 100.

Rashida Catlin (Green) had the most stamina among the under-20 girls, winning the 1 500 but her housemate Alison Farley was probably the strongest, winning the shot put.

FINAL POINTS: Green 653, Blue 573, Yellow 514, Red 423.
