BDF's Super 8 Cup
Published on: 5/8/07.

by EZRA STUART THE BIG BOOTS of the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) were bang on as they shot down Brittons Hill 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to win the Guinness Super 8 Cup final and $4 000 first prize at the YMCA on Sunday night.

Greg Belle, Rohan Hall, captain Reveire Williams and Dwayne McClean were on target for the BDF but their hero was goalkeeper Kerry Holder, who superbly saved the first two spot kicks from Brittons Hill's captain Gregory "Lalu" Goodridge and Omar Archer.

Only Rondelle Vaughan and Curtis Blackman converted their penalties for Brittons Hill, who paid the price for squandering several scoring chances in a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation time.

Shoot-out

It was the Kevin Millard-coached BDF outfit's first title success since winning the Knockout title in 1994 and the Premier League in 1995.

The shoot-out was required with the teams locked 1-1 after McClean magnificently volleyed home a free-kick by Williams with just four minutes left in the second period of extra time to cancel out Anthony Cumberbatch's 104th-minute goal in the first period of extra time.

Brittons Hill had the better of the exchanges but their strikers were goal-shy, whereas the BDF players, with their hair painted in the army's colour of green, soaked up the pressure and bided their time with a late rally against weary-looking opponents.

From as early as the fifth minute lanky striker Travis "Angus" Coppin should have opened the scoring for Brittons Hill but was denied by Holder's brilliance in goal. Coppin got another chance when he received a through ball but overran it and Holder easily collected.

At the other end, 19-year-old McClean headed over the bars and then had a fierce shot parried by goalkeeper Wayne "Trini" Williams, who caught the rebound.

Just before half-time, celebrations by Brittons Hills were short-lived when veteran striker Adrian "AA" Davis scooped a shot over the head of Holder from an off-side position and the goal was disallowed.

Ten minutes into the second half, Davis outpaced his marker but hit the underneath of the crossbar with a lob over Holder's head.

Shortly afterwards, Coppin, whose first touch let him down throughout the match, failed to control inside the box.

Brittons Hill had another chance when Cumberbatch timed his run excellently but his firm shot was spectacularly saved by the diving Holder.

Just before the end of regulation time, Malcolm "Buju" Marshall almost got his first goal for BDF but headed Hall's left-side cross wide.

Then came the extra-time drama with Cumberbatch arriving just in time to finish off a good move down the right side as Cleve Boyce set substitute Edwin Brereton free and his square-back was relayed by Coppin across the goal-mouth.

This got BDF into action and they really lifted their game, showing a lot of urgency to get the equaliser which eventually came, compliments Williams' accurate free-kick, which resulted from an unnecessary foul by Vaughan on Belle in the penalty box.

Williams also had a chance to win the game for BDF when he slipped through the Brittons Hills defence following an exchange with McClean but sent his shot high.

In the third-place match, dethroned champs Claytons Kola Tonic Notre Dame came from behind to thrash Paradise's Division 2 side 4-1.

Andre Bourne gave Paradise a tenth-minute lead but Bryan Neblett equalised in the 44th minute.

In the second half, midfielder Curtis Odle earned a penalty which John Parris converted in the 65th minute. Jerry Alexander scored with a bicycle kick in the 77th minute. And Odle capped a good night by setting up Rudy Grosvenor's injury-time header with a corner.
