'Tighter' security measures at Port

The Bridgetown Port is enhancing security and moving to implement new measures to address the challenges of staging the final of the 2007 Cricket World Cup in Barbados.

Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin and Assistant Commissioner Emmerson Moore got an update of these measures as they toured the Port and met with senior management of Barbados Port Inc. Tuesday.

Police, officials of the Ministry of International Transport, Customs and port management discussed a number of sensitive issues and security plans for the seaport, which would dovetail with national security arrangements for the cricket.

Six second round matches and the final, to be hosted at Kensington Oval, will be played in Barbados in April and the island will experience a major increase in air and sea traffic.

Chairman of Barbados Port Inc., Larry Tatem, and chief executive Everton Walters both thanked the commissioner for his visit. They also said it would enhance their working relationship.

Dottin then said he was happy to see first-hand the critical work being done at the seaport.

"It was a useful meeting and I am impressed with the initiatives being undertaken. It is about our agencies integrating and discharging their responsibilities," he said.
