THE BARBADOS DARTS ASSOCIATION has come in for high praise from Minister of Sport Esther Byer-Suckoo.
Speaking Saturday night at the association's 7th Annual Awards Dinner at Almond Bay, Hastings, Christ Church, Byer-Suckoo said she was astounded by the organisational efficiency of the association and said Government would be doing all that it could to strengthen sporting associations, such as the darts body.
She said the interaction within the association presented a wonderful opportunity for bonding and mentorship between the young and old, adding that said the association augmented the whole idea of community development through sport.
Responding to a plea from president of the association, Reuben Gibson, for a home for the sport, Suckoo said though she could not provide one at the present juncture, the request would be given active consideration.
A number of players who excelled during the past year received trophies and monetary reward for their efforts.
Barbados' top darts player, Anthony Forde, was the toast of the evening. His outstanding 2007 season was recognised by the association and footage of his play at last year's Ladbrokes.com World Championship at Alexandra Palace, London, was shown.
Forde defeated Japanese champion Akihiro Nagakawa before losing to the reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld
in an intense battle.
Among those being rewarded for outstanding play were 2007 Most Valuable Player Anthony Brathwaite, who also copped the men's singles title; women's doubles champions Maureen Shepherd and Mechelle Stephens; doubles winners Andre Weekes and Anthony Forde; and mixed doubles winners Judy Browne and Stephen Skinner. Shepherd was also the female singles champ. Kisanka Watts was voted the
most improved player.
Cable & Wireless Flighters copped the knockout championship and Vitamalt Graduates were the league champions.
Special tribute was also paid to past president Brian Evelyn, for his sterling contribution to the organisation over the years. (CH)
