US couple gives to St Martin's

STUDENTS of St Martin's Mangrove Primary got an early Easter gift on Wednesday, one that will last for a long time.

Thanks to Neil and Susan Cooke, of Maryland in the United States, the school has a new set of books and other educational supplies to assist with its various programmes.

Susan, a teacher by profession, said she and her husband felt they needed to give something back to the country and contacted the Flying Fish Foundation about it.

The couple visited Barbados several years ago on a cruise ship and was on a similar trip this time around.

Susan said their gift was a "drop in the bucket", but they were impressed with the work of the foundation.

Principal Janice Thompson said the school was blessed to receive the donation and it was a testimony to what they were trying to instill in the children.

She said they encouraged the students to go out there and share their talents with others and to do good, for they would be rewarded positively.

The Flying Fish Foundation is a United States-based charity, which seeks to utilise its resources to inspire and benefit the children of Barbados. The first shipment of supplies from the foundation arrived in Barbados in April 2001. Several local organisations have benefited from its generosity over the years.
