Published on: 3/26/08.

One more bronze medal in the latter part of Monday night's session of the 37th CARIFTA Games at the Silver Jubilee Stadium took Barbados' total to 26 (seven gold, ten silver, nine bronze).

Barbados finished fourth in the medal count, based on gold, with perennial champions Jamaica at the top again with 69 (29-25-15), followed by Trinidad and Tobago (10-10-10) on 30 and The Bahamas (8-3-12) on 23. Martinique were fifth with 14 medals, including five gold.

Sprint hurdler Kierre Beckles earned the Austin Sealy Award, a feat not done by a Barbadian in over ten years, for her record-breaking 13.43 seconds performance in the 100-metre hurdles.

The Under-20 Girls' 4x400 metres relay team took bronze in 3 minutes 44.41 seconds, behind Jamaica (3:39.12) and Trinidad and Tobago (3:43.65).

Sade Sealy gave the team a great start in second place and Latoya Griffith built on it.

They lost a bit of ground with Sade Greene on third leg, but Mara Weekes, who is clearly still recovering from her hamstring injury, was passed by the Trinidadian anchor at the 50 mark.

The Under-20 Boys' were fourth.

John Jones finished sixth in the Under-17 Boys' discus and Jonathan Harper, eighth; Kemar Jones was ninth in the Under-17 triple jump and Ernest Rollins fourth in the Under-20 Boys' event.
