BARBADOS can deliver "the upset of the century" and knock the United States out of the World Cup football qualifiers but the corporate sector and Government have a major role to play in preparation of the national team.
Minutes after eliminating Dominica in first-round play at Kensington Oval on Wednesday, head coach Eyre Sealy called for help from the business community.
"No two ways about it; we are going to need a huge injection of funds from corporate Barbados in our build-up for the clash with the United States in June. It is a big match and it is going to cost a lot of money to get the boys prepared in every way for us to achieve what we are going after.
"We are going to need some help from all of the stakeholders to achieve the upset of the century," said Sealy at the post- match Press briefing following the 1-0 win over Dominica.
Sealy, a former national goalkeeper, said the team made plenty of sacrifices over the past few weeks.
"Many of the players are amateurs, who sacrificed a lot for the national good. It is tough when you have to work and then head to practice consistently. The team has got to be credited for the focus, discipline and commitment for the task ahead," he said.
Sealy gave the team between 7.5 and 8 for the victory against the resolute Dominicans.
"I thought we played well and the guys can be proud of the effort. I would naturally have been happier with a wider margin of victory but we missed some chances and their keeper [Glenson Prince] kept them in the end."
The coach made special mention of England-based defender Emmerson Boyce, who had a telling influence as a roving right-back.
"We have been trying for some time to find quality wing-backs who can defend well and go forward and Emmerson did a fine job." Captain Norman Forde, who was watched by mum Estyre and wife Tricia, said team work did the trick but acknowledged that the team would have to make a huge step up for the clash with the Americans.
Forde, 30, said the team needed to have a few more quality players.
"We still have to search for a couple more players. We need a little more quality for the tougher teams. It is important to have quality and experienced players to help the young guys."
Technical advisor Keith Griffith said he was not afraid of the United States.
"With God's help and the Barbados Football Association (BFA) putting all of the things in place, we will shock the world and knock out USA."
Griffith said he was looking forward to the showdown with the United States in Barbados.
"I would love to play the United States here at Kensington Oval in June in front of what will be a larger crowd. What needs to happen in the interim is that we need to have about six warm-up matches against the likes of Jamaica, Trinidad, Canada, Honduras, El Salvador and others.
"We need six matches against quality teams and then we will be ready for the United States. We can beat the United States, but we need the matches and a few more players from out of England. We need the right blend and the backing of the Bajan public."
