Nicole Garofano, of Counterpart Caribbean at The Future Centre in Edgehill, St Thomas, told the WEEKEND NATION that Earth Hour, to run from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Barbados time, now had more than 110 countries registered, from Barbados to Fiji, to the Cayman Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, to larger countries like Canada, Britain and the United States.
She said her organisation had distributed reminders to the public and business sector this week to encourage participation in the event which was also aimed at reducing the resources required to create electricity.
In fact, she added, Barbados Light & Power was ready to measure the reduction in load on the system for the hour "so we can calculate the amount of carbon emissions that have been saved from the event".
She also said the ministries of Family, Youth, Sports and Environment, Health, Tourism, Finance and Energy, and Foreign Affairs and Trade, had all been invited to participate. (PR/BW)
