MP: Settle Oval issue

GOVERNMENT is being challenged to meet with officials of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) and put the issue of the future use of Kensington Oval to rest once and for all.

Oppostion Leader David Thompson said on Sunday during his party's scenic bus ride to East Coast Road that both entities needed to come
up with a business plan that would ensure the financial success of the multi-million-dollar cricket stadium.

"At the end of the day, it is the taxpayers of this country who would have funded the expenditure for the redevelopment of Kensington and we need at the end of the day to have value for that investment."

Two weeks ago, Acting Prime Minister Reginald Farley said Government had spent $130 million on Kensington and had no plans of walking away from the investment.

This was in response to an earlier statement made by BCA president Tony Marshall that that body owned Kensington.

"Kensington has been owned by the BCA for a very long time. Government would have come to the table as a partner investing
a considerable sum, and the BCA would have brought the value of the pre-development value of The Oval, about $25 million
as its contribution," Farley had said.

"Before any work was done, there was a clear understanding that Government would have been providing financing for the redevelopment,
but that there would be a new arrangement afterward that recognises that investment." (JW)
