A nation of hypocrites
Published on: 12/20/06.

PERHAPS I haven't been listening as closely as I should, but I cannot recall hearing any great and negative outcry from the public concerning the Barbadian police officers who were, not too long ago, seeking work in Bermuda.

It seems to me that if we are so upset and vocal about our neighbours and other people coming here and taking away Barbadian jobs, we should be equally vocal when Bajans travel the world over taking away other people's jobs.

Sir, we are hypocrites and we are fast becoming an inward-looking bunch of people. Most of us have, in one way or another, benefited from the hospitality of countries around the world. They say you can find a Barbadian selling something or other alongside the Volga River.

If all the countries in which Barbadians reside, legally and illegally, rounded them all up and sent them home our little island would sink.

We should not, at this point in our development, adopt a higher-up and better-off attitude. We were not always where we are. We did not get here on our own. Our debts to others are great and we should remember that it is very possible that those we pass on the way up, we may very well pass on the way down. A word to the wise.
