Springer bids Blackett goodbye
Published on: 6/30/05.

AFTER 22 YEARS with Springer Memorial Secondary School, Joan Blackett had a rousing send-off yesterday.

The principal's positive impact at the school was clear, given the number of musical, dance, drama and spoken tributes offered by all levels within the 1 335-strong student body.

The poems spoke about the level of discipline which she instilled and how she raised the esteem of the girls and the school's public image.

One skit on the minibus culture depicted how the students now had to wear the correct uniforms or feel Blackett's bamboo.

The gifts flowed as well, from chandeliers to booklets, bouquets to spa treatments and even part of a Crop-Over costume.

Blackett, who was principal for the last 12 years, said one of the things which helped her to turn around the school was motivating the girls to be strong and
think positively.

She officially retires at the end of August.
