However, with a lead of 99 points on the nearest challengers, Springer Memorial seem to be on course for their fifth straight title. They have 267.5 points, with The Lodge on 158.5, followed by Harrison's on 112, Queen's 108 and Coleridge and Parry on 100 .
In the field events, Deandra Dottin of St James Secondary set a new record of 11.68 metres in the Under-17 Girls' shot put; Brandon Inniss of Lester Vaughan School also set a new record of 44.57 metres in the Under-15 Boys' discus and Daniel Burke of Harrison College won the Under-17 Boys' triple jump with a season's best 13.80 metres. He has now won all four of his events and is the victor ludorum with the full 40 points, although he may share it with another athlete.
On the track, Mara Weekes of The Lodge ran the race of the day in the Under-17 Girls' 400 metres, setting a new meet record of 54.91 seconds. She went out quickly and kept the pace along the back stretch while schoolmate Sadé Sealy gained ground. On the homestretch, Sadé pulled alongside and seemed to go ahead, but Mara found one last burst to cross the line first, Sadé second in 54.95, both within the 56.59 set by Lucy Ann Richards in 1996.
Weekes returned later to win the 100 metres, and with only the 200 left today, is on course for victrix ludorum along with Springer Memorial's Akela Jones who only has to win the 100 metres.
Ellerslie's Christopher Davis returned from the 100 metres and had to pull out all the stops to beat Lester Vaughan's Jabarri Gibson in the Under-17 Boys' 400 metres and teammate Jerry Lee Davis won the Under-20 Boys' race, leading from the gun. Latoya Griffith of Alleyne School returned from winning the 1 500 metres to overtake Chynna Glasgow of Queen's College and Springer's Cherri Ann Forde to win the Senior Girls' 400 metres.
Among the juniors, Jerrad Mason of Harrison College won the Under-13 Boys' 200 metres; Shaquille Alleyne of Alexandra left the rest of the field in his dust to take the Under-15 Boys' race, and Shavonne Husbands of Deighton Griffith did the same in the girls' field.
Crystal Holder of Queen's was a winner in both the 800 and 1 500 metres; Jerome Stuart of Queen's turned the tables on 1 500 metres winner Anthonio Mascoll of Ellerslie. Also in winners' row in the middle distance were Najuma Comissiong of Harrison's; Matthew Wright of Queen's and Christian Rock of The Lodge.
The sprint hurdles were as exciting as usual. Kenrisha Brathwaite of Lester Vaughan won the Under-17 Girls' race; Greggmar Swift of St Leonard's got the jump on Tyrell Forde of Harrison's and Stefan Goodridge of Queen's was the winner of the 110 metres hurdles.
