CAVE SHEPHERD's department store on Broad Street is paying tribute to Barbados' National Heroes in a two-week in-store promotion.

Local advertising and media manager for Duty Free Caribbean, Kay Wiseman, said the company felt it was important to acknowledge those who had made significant contributions to the country, hence two weeks of activities to highlight heroes, leading up to National Heroes Day on April 28.

Crew from the visiting freedom schooner Amistad kicked off activities last Wednesday when shoppers heard the story of the Africans on the original ship La Amistad, who made history with their revolt for freedom, which
they won in the ensuing landmark United States court case in 1839.

A display of memorabilia from La Amistad as well as speeches from Captain Dr Eliza Garfield and crew member Sierra Leonean Samuel Yokie attracted many who took the opportunity to also chat with Canadian Nina Cox, and Dani Settle of the United States.

Barbados' only living national hero, the Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers, was there to sign his autobiography on Thursday, and yesterday it was Dr Jean Holder's turn to sign his book The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow – National Hero And Father
Of Independence
.

Minister of Education Ronald Jones will be in the store on Friday signing his book, Quotes And Images Of The Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow.(GC)
