Shurland Greaves and Carlisle Best starred with both bat and ball as Empire secured a convincing 74 runs victory over Police in the finals of the G4S Security Over-Forty Masters Tournament at the Bank Hall, St Michael ground yesterday.

After scoring 52 in the Empire innings, Greaves, who was named Man Of The Match, returned to grab four for 34 to put a halt to Police's quest for victory. Best chipped in with a top score of 56 not out and then complemented Greaves in taking three for 58 in the Police innings.

Chasing a target of 250 for victory Police ran into early trouble at 26 for two. However, a third wicket partnership of 83 off ten overs between Wainwright Brewster (57) and Winston Goddard (47) pushed police in the lead.

With a required run rate of just over eight runs per over, police were well ahead when Greaves and Best were introduced into the attack. Best broke the partnership when he had Goddard caught by Jeremy Alleyne at mid-off. One over later Greaves induced Brewster into playing a sweep shot which resulted in him presenting a catch to the 'keeper.

Once that partnership was broken, no other police batsman offered any real resistance to the Empire spinners. The police innings eventually folded for 175, a further 74 runs adrift of the victory target.

Earlier Empire scored 249 for five off 31 overs with Best and Greaves reaching half centuries. The Inniss' cousins of Peter and Michael got Empire off to a brisk start with a partnership of 63 in just eight overs. Jeremy Alleyne got a quick-fire 27 before Mapp (16) and Best (56) not out, respectfully, led Empire to their final score.
