Pierre gets nod

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti After a week of consultations Haiti's Senate has given the nod for President René Préval's nominee, Eric Pierre, to be confirmed as the country's new prime minister.
Seventeen senators voted in favour of Pierre while two abstained on Wednesday night.
Former Prime Minister Jacques Edouard Alexis was dismissed after legislators said he failed to take steps to address the high cost of living. (CMC)
EPA concern
ST JOHN'S, Antigua Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General Edwin Carrington says the recently negotiated Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) and the European Union could compromise the region's chances of deepening relations with African countries.
The CARIFORUM countries, which include CARICOM and the Dominican Republic, are expected to sign the accord next month despite concerns from some countries. (CMC)
Police to act
GEORGETOWN, Guyana The Guyana police says it will take "appropriate action" against lawbreakers as it severely criticised the conduct of the leadership and supporters of the main opposition People's National Congress Reform (PNCR) which participated in a protest march in the capital on Thursday.
