Demand to dismiss top cop

CASTRIES, St Lucia – The St Lucia Police Welfare Association (PWA) has given Prime Minister Stephenson King seven days to dismiss Acting Police Commissioner John Broughton.

President Verne Guard said the removal of the top police officer was in the country's best interest and warned that if Broughton was not removed within the specified period the association would meet to determine its next move.

He says the security of the island is at risk as a result of the failure of Broughton, an Englishman, to get the police force operating efficiently under his stewardship.

"Mr Broughton has the ultimate responsibility as the commissioner of police and he understood the contract given to him and agreed to its terms by his acceptance of the job, and if you are given responsibility you should carry it out and show stewardship," he said.

"This is something that affects the entire country and it is a serious matter. We cannot leave the city and various towns across the country to be policed by members of the public, and this is the situation as it exists now. (CMC)
