Chase does Carlton in
Published on: 5/12/08.

A splendid match-winning unbeaten knock of 93 by Roston Chase condemned last year's runners-up Carib Carlton to a six-wicket defeat at the hands of Guardian General Barbados Youth yesterday in the opening round of the Sagicor General Super Cup.

Chase's knock helped his team overhaul Carlton's 189 all out, off 42.2 overs, as Barbados Youth ended on 194 for four off 48.2 overs.

The tall right-hander's innings contained some lovely strokes on both sides of the wicket. His timing
was such that he often found space to pierce the heavily populated off-side field.

His 124-ball innings included 11 fours and one six and lasted 171 minutes.

Chase shared in two consecutive half-century partnerships. He added 79 for the fourth wicket with Chad Proverbs who made 32 from 50 balls with five fours.

After Proverbs played on to Amal Nurse, Chase and Cummins (24 not out) put on an unfinished fifth-wicket stand of 63 to seal the victory with ten balls left.

Earlier, Carlton's innings was built around fine knocks from Kirk Gibson (59) and Marlon Graham (43).

AT BANK HALL. ICBL Empire comfortably defeated BNB St Catherine by 126 runs, but the match was marred by the controversial dismissal of visiting captain Derick Bishop.

Bishop was adjudged run out for 27 at a time when St Catherine, chasing an imposing 303 to win, were trying to recover through a fifth-wicket partnership 54 that involved Joel Leacock.

A runner was standing at square-leg for Bishop, who had just injured his ankle, but after playing a ball into the off-side Bishop ran the entire length of the pitch and non-striker Leacock ran to the keeper's end.

The runner, Ishmail Rudder, took a few steps out of his ground and Leacock made it to the crease before Rudder got back.

With the bails broken at the bowler's end, Bishop was given out, but he remained in the middle protesting that he never called for a runner.

Empire, sent in, blazed the highest total of the day – 302 for four – that was built around Jason Parris' 93 off 104 balls, and even fifties from Jason Hinds and Shawn Graham that came from 67 balls.

St Catherine were restricted to 176 in 34.4 overs, with Andre Evelyn grabbing four for 46.

AT WILDEY. An unbeaten seventh-wicket stand between captain Ian Bradshaw and Renee Greaves sealed victory for Wanderers by four wickets over Cable & Wireless.

Bradshaw topscored with 43 in his team's reply of 178 after bowling out Wanderers for 177 in 43.3 overs.

Captain Courtney Browne with 54 and wicketkeeper Cyprian Payne made 58 not out for Cable and Wireless.
