LARRY BABB slammed his third Division 1 hundred, and helped Police prove that the team who endures to the end will win, when they humbled Super Centre Spartan by six wickets on the final day of their first round Division 1 cricket match.
Babb mauled the modest Spartan bowling attack for 115 off just 61 balls, as Police, set 201 for victory from a minimum of 34 overs, hit the jackpot with 60 balls to spare.
Police captain Brian Corbin, who was not out on 20, formalised the result when he guided a low full-toss from Jared Bernadin to gully and scrambled the winning run about ten minutes before the scheduled close.
Spartan had gained a 56-run, first innings lead, when they captured the last Police wicket to dismiss the lawmen for 224, and emphasise their superior position over the first two days of the match.
But Babb and his clean hitting took centre stage, when Spartan offered the cops a glimmer of hope, after they declared their second innings on 144 for five about 15 minutes after the interval.
Rohan Nurse led the way for Spartan with
an unbeaten 76 which occupied a little over an hour-and-a-half and contained seven fours and two sixes from 83 balls.
Philip Browne snared two early scalps when Police started the chase, but Babb entered, and struck eight fours and eight sixes in a little under an hour-and-a-half to put the home team on track for victory.
After Police had wobbled to 27 for two, Babb added 52 for third wicket with Dwayne Yearwood, who made 47, and dominated a fourth-wicket stand of 118 with Corbin which effectively transformed the complexion of the game.
Babb reached his landmark when he swept his 57th delivery from Reydon Toppin to fine leg for two, and celebrated with a straight six off the same bowler.
When he was bowled, moving down and swinging across the line at a slower delivery from Bernadin, Police were within reach of the "promised land". (AR)
