Call to rethink approach to fisheries
Published on: 5/19/08.

CARIBBEAN GOVERNMENTS have been asked to rethink their priorities when it comes to devoting resources to land-based over marine initiatives.

This call was made by Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) executive director
Hugh Saul, as he addressed the sixth meeting of the CRFM's Caribbean Fisheries Forum in Paramaribo, Suriname, recently.

Saul pointed out that 82 per cent of CARICOM member states' jurisdiction is ocean space,
which leaves about 18 per cent
as land, but this was not reflected in governmental priorities.

A decision was taken
by the CRFM executive council
on the final day of the Suriname meeting to carry regional
fishers' call for a reprieve from rising diesel costs before agricultural officials at the preparatory meeting of the
Council for Trade and Economic Development to be held in Guyana Wednesday, May 21.
