SOME KEY ANNOUNCEMENTS in local politics are expected to be made today.

The most important should be the names of the new Cabinet.

This may be disclosed this evening when Prime Minister David Thompson announces his Cabinet. He will do so during a live radio and television broadcast at 8 p.m. to the nation.

The swearing-in of the Cabinet will be done tomorrow at Kensington Oval where a national ecumenical service will be held starting at 3:30 p.m.

Whoever is named to the Cabinet, as well as to the position of deputy Prime Minister and Senior Minister can look forward to a hefty salary with allowances.

According to the Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries (Remuneration and Allowances) Order, 2007, the Deputy Prime Minister and Senior Minister will both earn an annual salary of $155 918.04, an entertainment allowance of $33 738.96 and a travelling allowance of $29 417.88.

The other ministers, including ministers of state, will earn an annual salary of $137 566.20, an entertainment allowance of $33 738.96 and a travelling allowance of $21 462.48.

Those appointed to the post of Parliamentary Secretary will earn an annual salary of $133 534.80, an entertainment allowance of $14 147.52 and a travelling allowance of $14 304.72.

Hours before today's roll out by the Prime Minister of the names of the various Government ministers, the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), which now forms the Opposition, will also be meeting with the Press.

The occasion will be to announce what was the outcome of a meeting held yesterday at its party headquarters, Grantley Adams House on Roebuck Street by its elected parliamentarians.

The main focus will be on who will be the Leader of the Opposition. (SP/ES)
