Airport chairman 'unaware of problems'

CHAIRMAN of Grantley Adams Airport Inc. Colin Brewer is standing his ground.

He is maintaining his earlier position that he is unaware of any problems affecting the more than 200 airport staff when the airport's operations fall under a board from January 16.

He said lengthy discussions were held with the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), as well as with the Ministry of the Civil Service, and there was full disclosure on the terms and conditions of employment for staff.

"I am still not aware of any specific problems and if there were any problems I am sure that the union would have communicated those problems to us."

On Wednesday, scores of disgruntled airport workers were up in arms, over the decision by management not to absorb many of them.

They also accused management of raising the qualification bar for candidates seeking employment at the airport, thereby eliminating several employed there.

Deputy general secretary of the NUPW, Dennis Clarke, said that during a television interview Brewer promised to absorb most of the workers in the new entity.

However, said Clarke, the board had opted to "pick and choose" those people it wanted to work with the company.

One worker produced a list of available positions in GAIA Inc. as at September 2005, which showed the company anticipated employing a workforce of 238, instead of the 400 employed under Government. (JW)
