Ball in Govt's court

PINNACLE FEEDS expects to hear something from Government by weekend about how to deal with raw material price increases that have caused the company to warn about higher animal feed prices.

The company's deputy general manager Vernon Weekes told the DAILY NATION yesterday that the company met with Government on Monday to discuss the matter.

"It was a cordial meeting, they understood our position and they are going to get back to us. They asked us to hold on until they got back to us. They will most likely get back to us by the end of the week," he said.

Minister of Agriculture Senator Haynesley Benn had asked that the major feed supplier not increase prices until there was a consultation with stakeholders.

Benn confirmed a meeting was held on Monday and said he would be addressing the matter "very shortly".

In a half-page advertisement last Friday, Pinnacle Feeds warned customers of a rise in prices due to an increase in the cost insurance freight (CIF) of corn which went from US$225 to US$292 during the last six months. In addition soybeans went from CIF US$332 to US$552 in the same period. (KB)
