Forde's flying start to 2006
Published on: 1/22/06.

BARBADOS' TOP CYCLIST, Barry Forde, started 2006 in grand style by breaking the track record in the 200 metres flying start at the Six-Days Of Rotterdam held at the Ahoy Sports Palace in the Netherlands earlier this month.

The 29-year-old world-rated rider, competing against a field which included keirin world champion Teun Mulder and kilo world champion Theo Bos, broke the record on the first night of competition. He clocked 10.77 seconds, beating the previous year's record of 11.1 seconds, which was set by Bos.

Forde broke the track record on the final night of the competition in a time of 10.73 seconds, ahead of team sprint silver medallist Tim Velt, and Bos.

The Barbadian is in preparation ahead of an intensive training camp, which will formally start later this month. He returned to the island last weekend and has been training on the road.

SUNSPORT caught up with him last week and he indicated this would be another crucial year for him and he was honing his skills in pursuit of more success on the international stage.

The well-built six-footer, who is based in Germany, declined to go into details but said he had renewed focus and was committed to bringing more glory to Barbados.

Though there was no confirmation, Forde is expected to represent the island at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, in March, and also expected to attend the World Cycling Championships in Bordeaux, France, from April 13 to 16.

Last year Forde became the first West Indian to win a medal at the World Championships when he earned bronze in the keirin in Carson, California, United States, in March. He also won two gold medals at the Pan American Championships in Argentina a month later. (PS)
