THE MAN who had a hand in the killing of teenager Anna Druzhinina more than a year ago confessed to manslaughter yesterday, saying he was wracked with guilt and had contemplated suicide.
Christopher Omar McCollin, 27, of Vineyard Tenantry, St Philip, was in the No. 4 Supreme Court where he was arraigned with murdering 16-year-old Druzhinina on November 8, 2008.
He denied that charge, but pleaded guilty to the lesser count of unlawfully killing her.
"On the 8th November, 2008, I never had any intention to kill anyone. I didn't know my co-accused would have wanted me to carry out a personal vendetta he had against the man," McCollin told the court.
Director of Public Prosecutions Charles Leacock, QC, who prosecuted along with Principal Crown Counsel Alliston Seale and Crown Counsel Elwood Watts, once again explained that under the Offences Against the Person Act, a killing which occurred in the course of another offence could no longer be considered murder.
"From the evidence," the prosecutor explained, "he led a supporting role, even though it was a very active role in those very supporting circumstances.
"I've decided this is a death which occurred within the course of another offence and in light of the decree of the Offences Against the Person Act and in light of the decided cases, the prosecution has accepted the plea in light of the circumstances," Leacock said.
The prosecutor also debunked rumours which he said had surrounded Druzhinina's death.
He said the teenager was not sexually molested, neither was her body mutilated in any way.
"Regrettably, she died after having slipping off, which as regard the culpability of the accused, in as much as it might not show the specific intent to kill, it certainly shows recklessness and, at its highest, a rather depraved indifference for human life," Leacock said.
McCollin is now on remand awaiting the compilation of a pre-sentencing report. He returns to court on February 26. (HLE)
No Mr DPP : 2/4/2010
I think the DPP should be replaced. I believe he is tired. In any event should he not be in an administrative position and leave the court appearance and court matters to his deputy, who does a much better job. The entire concept of murder and manslaughter seem to be lost. The DPP tells us that 'he decided' this offence occured during the commital of another. But what was the other (unknown )offence? What circumstances is he asking that consideration be given to? Here is what DPP should be considering:
- this victim was not invovled in the fracas between her stepfather and accused.
- slipping off whatever container should not be considered accidental
- the ordeal of the victim while waiting for her stepfather to arrive prior to expiring
- the attempts to dispose of her by burning the property.
Do you still think Mr DPP that Mc Collin, with all the time to retract as the two walked the water course, should still receive sunday school treatment?
I think not and so does many others.
Swift and Exacting! : 2/4/2010
There is something to be said for the Arabic countries and China, justice is swift and exacting. Criminals are given their just desserts and not kept as pampered thugs at the government's expense.
Co-Accused Confesses : 2/4/2010
People, please call this heinous and vicious crime exactly what it is...Execution By Hanging.
Imagine the hatred and anger that these two criminals with their animalistic behavior must have had in their hearts to plan and do such a thing. The poor child slipped off her makeshift "gallows" because these criminals intended for her to slip off.
Is the co-accused remorseful only because he got caught, or because he was experiencing flashbacks of witnessing this innocent, young child of God die in such a callous manner, and at his hands. It's possible he must have heard her neck separate from her upper torso after she plunged off the containers. When he tries to sleep, does he still hear her gurgling sounds of pain as the life was squeezed from her young body? Moreover, in their attempt to "over-kill" their victim and cause her remaining family members unspeakable and lifelong heartache, these two unrepentent cowards torched the house.
Are these two now to be let loose, back into society, to continue their evil ways? Did this co-accused mention anything about asking God, the deceased, her family or society to forgive him, or is he now shedding crocodile tears to garner pity for himself and save his own evil neck?
Finding excuses for criminals such as these is certain to give comfort to other would-be criminals that they can do the same and escape harsh punishment.
Wise up Barbadians, and continue to be a mostly godly nation and people.
I didn't want her to die : 2/4/2010
The courts r full of BS, I will rephrase what the prosecution said "Regrettably, she died after having slipping off, which as regard the culpability of the accused, in as much as it might not show the specific intent to kill".With due respect the girl did not asked to be put on the pail with a wire around her neck, the murderers did it,McCollin is an accomplice to the crime he is as guilty as his coconspirator.

Let this be a lesson for followers. You should always be a leader. He took a human life. End of story.
Co-accused confesses : 2/4/2010
I think McCollin is looking for mercy but he should not get any. You want to tell me that he put on a mask, broke into the man's house and now saying he didn't know what he was doing. He had clear knowledge of what he was going to do and even if he didn't, at some point in time when that poor child was being tied up, he could have made his way out and called the police, he had no right there and therefore should fell the full force of the law. That girl's life was cut short because of him and his devil friend. I don't mind paying taxes to keep you in prison
Offences Against the Person Act : 2/4/2010
Offences Against the Person Act . I like this ACT , If I wanted to commit a murder ,all I have to do is leave the see with the decease wallet and I will come under this ACT . Is that correct . It would be robbery and manslaughter

Face the man so he get shoot again ? Besides, revenge is best served cold. No matter what happens to them the step father got this on his head till his end of days too.
Really : 2/4/2010
So you go along with another person and commit murder and they have a law that says it is not murder. Both of the accused are guilty since it was pre meditated. Now if he was in the good old State of Texas the death penalty would be in his future.
These ignorant lawyers we got sometimes I wish it could be their families who died so they can face these silly arguments they bring to court. If that girl was related to me I would go court and beg the judge to forgive him cause a couple days later I would be exacting my vengeance and it would be worse that anything Barbados ever see.
Co accused confessed : 2/4/2010
Why are we degrading the lost of human life and making all these lame excuses for these murderers in the name of the law. Or is it we are too lazy or incompetent to put these murders. on murder charges before a judge and jury and have them convicted.
To me it is appalling how much nicerties are aforded to these killers with no reguards for the victims, their family and friends. It so sad.
Murder i say. : 2/4/2010
McCollin should never see another street in Barbados as long as he live . He got with his foolish self plus the other fool ,went in a man's house, the stepdaughter that was living end up dead and you saying what ? We need to do away with all the technical jargon on our statute books and get straight to the point .Our archaic laws want changing . Murder is murder ! so do not try to bring all sort of technicalities to bear on it .The fact of the matter is that he and his friend went in the house and because of their sick minds that girl died .Intended to or not. Making matters worse the house was torched . What recklessness Leacock ?It was as Bajans say at the height of wuflessness. They are wicked .If his so called friend had somthing for the step father he should be man enough to face him what ever the consequences .
