Breese stars for Durham

LONDON - Jamaican all-rounder Gareth Breese snared a three-wicket haul and helped Durham whip Surrey by 60 runs in the Friends Provident Trophy match at The Oval yesterday.

Electing to bat in the Group C fixture, Durham posted a sturdy 287 for four off their 50 overs and then restricted Surrey to 227 all out in 47.2 overs.

Breese was the chief wicket-taker for Durham, claiming three for 42 off ten overs, as he helped trigger a Surrey collapse that saw them dip from 130 for two to 139 for six.

Durham's captain Will Smith stroked 77 off 99 balls - a knock which earned him Man Of The Match honours , while Kyle Coetzer (61), Ian Blackwell, with 57 off 49 balls, and Dale Benkenstein, 45 off 36 balls, all made useful contributions to Durham's winning total. Coetzer and Smith put on 100 for the second wicket. (CMC)
