THE ENHANCED SEVERANCE packages being sought for the 57 Andrews Sugar Factory workers by the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) would cost nearly half a million dollars.
Informed sources in the agricultural sector revealed the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC) would have to pay out an additional $495 304.77 – money that it is not now required to be spent because the Severance Payment Act does not demand it.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, sought to give the sugar industry’s side in the impasse between the BWU and the BAMC, that up to last night had caused a six-day shutdown of the sugar harvest and Portvale Factory, the lone cane-grinding facility in the island, located in Blowers, St James.
According to the well placed source, the Severance Payment Act defined what a severed worker was due.
