14 000 more stay-over visitors than last year

Stay-over visitor arrivals in Barbados for the period January to August 2010 increased by 4.1 per cent on the comparable period last year.
According to figures from the Barbados Statistical Service, 365 221 visitors had arrived on these shores as at August 31, which represents an increase of 14 292 people over last year.
The United States of America, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago and Other Countries markets increased by 20.4 per cent, 20.9 per cent, 3.7 per cent and 15.8 per cent, respectively.
However, Britain, Germany, Other Europe and Other CARICOM markets recorded decreases of 8.4 per cent, 10.5 per cent, 0.6 per cent and 5.7 per cent, respectively.
Meanwhile, the number of cruise passenger arrivals stood at 407 604, representing a decrease of 1.9 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2009.
For the month of August alone, stay-over visitor arrivals numbered 41 882, which represents an increase of 7.3 per cent on August 2009.
The United States, Canada, Britain, Other Europe and Other Countries markets recorded increases of 16.4 per cent, 36.4 per cent, 7.9 per cent, 16.7 per cent and 2.1 per cent, respectively.
There were decreases in the Germany, Trinidad and Tobago and Other CARICOM markets of 31.7 per cent, 1.3 per cent and 10.5 per cent, respectively. In addition, cruise passenger arrivals stood at 19 777 – a 12.6 per cent decrease compared to August 2009. (NB)
