HEARTS POUNDED and sirens wailed in the early hours of yesterday morning, as mass casualty services went into action after a two-bus collision in Christ Church.
Both a Transport Board bus and a privately owned mini-bus were travelling from Bridgetown to Christ Church when they collided just after 7:30 a.m. at Sargeant’s Village, near the entrance to the popular Sheraton Mall.
As a result, 22 people were injured, but luckily, there were no life threatening injuries.
A homeowner near the crash allowed medical services to use the nearby Corner Pentecostal Church where the injured were treated.
Four ambulances, two firetenders from the Barbados Fire Service’s Probyn Street headquarters, and police responded to the incident.
According to the Royal Barbados Police Force’s public relations officer, Inspector David Welch, the three most seriously injured were taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Welch also revealed that the driver of the minibus, Jason Reece, 28, of Golden Rock, Pinelands, complained of back pains and an abrasion to the right hand. He too, was transported to hospital.
The Transport Board bus was driven by Rodney Broomes, 35, of Pinder’s Avenue, Culloden Road, St Michael. (BA)

Thank God there were no fatalities or no life threathening injuries. I was thinking, two vehicles collided, both travelling in the same direction.

I do believe that they should be a school or a course for persons who want to drive psv. Each and anyone can drive zr or minivan, and that’s not correct. These people drive so reckless everyday and have no care for human life what soever. Yes we all have to make a dollar, but right is right and wrong is wrong. When would the goverment seriously address this problem, WHEN?????

It belies Barbados’ claim of being a developing country for the responsible government departments to allow these deadly mini busses and transport board busses to terrorize the masses. How many accidents and deaths will occur before the apathetic “leaders” of this country address this travesty?

It annoys me when I see things like this happening and then Government is called upon to do something about it. No Government with all the will in the world can legislate common sense or doing the right thing. People who drive these vehicles need to take responsibility for their own actions and those who call for others to do something about it should address their anger towards those who are responsible.

Ever since I was a child growing up in Barbados the driving has been reckless. We were nearly killed in Barbados at Christmas by a “crazy” driver. These people should come to North America and observe how well transport driving is here. The drivers are well trained and responsible.

I agree with the comments of ‘Thirdworld’. This is complete madness!  Strict speed limits need to be imposed on these drivers. Where else in any other so called developed country could public transport vehicles be driven like this. In fact,  speed limits need to be imposed on all drivers in Barbados. I am a frequent visitor to Barbados and find it amazing that drivers are openly using the roads as race tracks with no thought for the safety of others. This would be a joke if it wasn’t for the fact that people are being seriously injured and worst losing their lives. Something needs to be done by the government.

Some of the interational respondents really need to come off it no one drives as fast as Americans be it sun shine rain falls true the PSV and transport need better regulation but don’t brush the whole country with the same brush because the same can be said for drivers all over the world

Government, government, government - that’s all we hear.  People need to take responsibility for their own actions.  As far as scofflaws are concerned, a little more enforcement of existing laws would go a long way.  But, some guys never get the message.

If there was doubt, the evidence is being produced daily that would enable Ministry of Transport to do something practicable like revoke permits and drivers licenses. Here too is an avenue for the Courts to suspend, even endorse some drivers’ licenses.  H R of Transport Board needs to review the driving conduct and ability of some of their own. It is time to make some of the guilty ones repay for damages to the buses or be dismissed. Time for a rude awakening is now.
