$25 000 ganja lesson for teacher
Alison Vaughn Gale: charged with possession of cannabis.
Thu, July 29, 2010 - 12:00 AM
A TEACHER who was growing marijuana in her front yard will have to fork out $25 000 to avoid a 12-month stay at HMP Dodds.
Alison Vaughn Gale, 54, of Graeme Hall Terrace, Christ Church, appeared in the Oistins Magistrates’ Court yesterday, where she was charged with possession of cannabis, having a traffickable quantity of the drug, possession with intent to supply, and cultivation of the plants on Tuesday.
Acting Magistrate Alliston Seale convicted, reprimanded and discharged her for drug trafficking and withdrew the charge of possession with intent to supply.
The Acting Magistrate, however, fined her $10 000 in six months for simple possession, in addition to $15 000, also in six months for growing the illegal substance.
If Gale does not pay the fines, she will spend 12 months in prison.
The court heard that lawmen from the Drug Squad executed a search warrant at Gale’s home and found 11 plants growing in her front yard. They also found a loose quantity of ganja in the house.

DO NOT LET COLOUR BLIND US. SHE SHOULD GET THE SAME PUNISMENT AS OTHERS. I remember as a very young boy picking up the advocate newspaper for my father at the local store.
I am over sixty years now but I can still recall these words at the top of the paper “let justice be done though the heavens should fall” I stand to be corrected on the above, because I have been away so long from my beloved island.

Comment LinkThis woman has broken the law and should be punished, but those who say she should be remanded for cultivating 11 plants, should consider that most enlightened countries would view this as an offence, punishable by a fine as was done in this case. Before the chattering classes bay for her blood they should consider that unless it can be proved that she intended to supply for profit to others or in particular to minors then this is not a crime that is at the extreme ends of crimes, such as murder etc. Please save jail space for those who need to be there. I do believe that caribbean countries need to update their laws to reflect
modern thinking on sentencing in matters such as this. We should forward into the 20th century and do not allow our populace to stagnate in the 19th.

Comment LinkHmmm, this could put a wrench in my retirement plan.
Why are the fines/penalities still so extreme for weed. How does it compare to things like cocaine and heroin - just out of curiosity?
Personally I think growing a few in the yard for yourself shouldn’t be an issue.
Plus, dealing with these children? Man yes, might need a pull or two to calm your nerves.
Oh yeah, and Justice for all.

Comment Linkthis is a person of means… do you realy think that she needs to grow it. I am sure that she is not the person who looks after her garden… Her only fault is that she owns her house…. How come you get to call her a teacher if she has not praticed for years. It sounds like in good Bajan style you are making up stories as you go. You have one piece of truth and then you imbelish it to suit your needs. This is a mother and a grandmother that you are draging though the mud it could be me or you. As a mother I would do anything for my kids. How about You????

Comment LinkIt is beyond me and my way of reasoning why follow laws created by man to outlaw and destroy things created by Almighty like naturally growing plants that were probably here millions of years before us. Yet we legalise things created by man like alcohol and (to a lesser extent) weapons .
Time to wake up, alcohol destroys more lives and families. But I guess you cant grow alcohol in your yard for free, so somebody always gets paid for making it.
Another thought, if she got $25000 in “paper” money she can walk free. So there again somebody always gets paid.
Obviously money talks in this western world that has the masses not focusing on the BIG picture

Comment LinkJust to clarify, Alison Gale has not taught for over 26 years. I find it interesting that this fact is omitted, thereby sensationalising this incident with the implication that there are other people’s children in her care.

Comment LinkNo1. That is an awful picture of her and I think they did it on purpose. LOL LOL LOL.
No2. If she was black in anyway she undoubtedly would have been given a greater fine and she definitely would spent sometime in a cell.Again if she was black the only thing they probably would not put in the paper about her is her blood type.We only know she is a teacher.
No4. Lets be real. There is a law for black ppl and another for white ppl.It has always been that way and it is least likely to change.L

Comment LinkThis woman should also be stripped of her job and teaching license. Nurses and doctors are stripped of their license to practice if found guilty of such acts. It is also clear that there is still issues around color and equality.

Comment LinkIt’s funny reading some of these comments. Ever wonder why a plant that was created by God is illegal. Check the history on how and why marijuana was made illegal instead of calling for people to serve time for something that will exist way after all of us pass. It’s time they decriminalize it and I guarantee you that much of the crime associated with it will deteriorate (i.e. the prohibition of alcohol in the U.S.) Marijuana grows freely in so-called 3rd world countries and it’s uses surpass smoking it. Imagine if all these black and brown people of the world began exporting hemp and were able to pay off the loans from the IMF. I’m sure they wouldn’t have that, they rather have us implement these laws on our own to keep us in check. The proof is in this article, these laws hurt us way more than it does them.

Comment LinkThis kind of institutionalized criminality makes me sick - I am talking about the police. What has happened here is this: someone has taken some seeds from nature, put them in the earth and given them water so they grow. Then some group of thugs came along with guns and took this lady and made her give them $25,000 . HELLO??? anybody there. WHAT IS GOING ON in this world. I live in The Netherlands and everyone can grow 5 plants if they want to. FOR GODS SAKE, if we want to grow the plant we will. These police will get their comeback.
