SEVENTY?ACRES of cane at Searles Plantation, a farm belonging to the Barbados Agricultural Management Company, were scorched yesterday.
One fire tender under the direction of leading fire officer Anderson Walkes and two fire officers were kept busy as they sought to contain the blaze which started about 10 a.m. and was only brought under control just after 3 p.m.
Motorists had to contend with falling ash and smoke which billowed across the stretch of road running from the roundabouts at Coral Ridge and lower St Patrick’s, Christ Church.
Ash was seen as far as Fontabelle in St Michael.
