Breathalyser testing for apparent drunk driving could be in force in Barbados within months.

Minister of Transport and Works Michael Lashley indicated this today at the launch of the Alpha 126 Traffic School, headed by long-time road safety activist Sharmane Roland-Bowen.

Lashley said the introduction of breathalyser testing was among draft amendments to the Road Traffic Act which he hoped to take to Parliament in the next two months.

“The need for breathalyser legislation arises out of the fact that alcohol impairment and driving are a very dangerous combination, with consequences varying from vehicle or property damage to death,” Lashley told police officers, road safety advocates and senior officers from his ministry attending the function.
