ANTHONY GABBY CARTER has added a ninth title to his name.

The man who has won a calypso crown in every decade since the competition started, drew even with tentmate Red Plastic Bag (RPB) early this morning when he took the coveted title away from the other nine finalists with a score of 441.5 points.

According to reliable sources Gabby was leading coming out of the semis and he remained in that position. Tassa, who was said to be in second spot, finished tenth.

He beat two-time monarch Adrian Clarke into second place, and also denied defending monarch RPB, who finished third, his tenth title.

Gabby took the title with Haiti and Ole Ashe. His victory did not go down well with the crowd. For the second time in less than a week, a winner was booed by fans. TC, who also hails from De Digicel Big Show, was booed last Sunday at Bushy Park when she was named as the winner of the Sweet Soca competition.

The boos of discontent started when pre-show favourite Colin Spencer and tentmate Crystal from the Cave Shepherd All Stars Calypso Tent were announced in joint seventh position.

There was more noise of protest when RPB was announced in third than when Gabby was named as the eventual winner.

RPB has the satisfaction of pulling the largest response from the crowd who were waving red plastic bags en masse for both Signs and La La, and in support of their king who had to settle for second runner-up this time around.

Clarke brought a brand new song in No Plastic Bag Day, which some might say was visionary at the time, and gained a decent response for it.

In terms of response he would have been among the top three going into the second half for his solid rendition and presentation of Crowd Response. Blood and RPB would have been up there as well.

There were two ties in the final standings. Blood and TC tied for fifth and Colin Spencer and Crystal Cummins-Beckles were right behind in seventh.

Despite the obvious disapproval of the crowd, Gabby was thankful to fans for their support.

“Thank you for all your help. Thank you for your friendship. Thank you for all your love. You know all, all, all praises to Jahovah yuh know. All praises Jahovah . . . . I could not do it without Mike Sealy I just want to thank him. Thank him for his help and his love, his commitment. His long hours in his studio, everything,” Gabby said shortly after accepting his trophy.

He took home the first prize of $10 500 and a fully loaded Ford Focus car.

The final positions in descending order and points are as follows: Gabby (441.5), AC (424), RPB (418.5), John King (413.5), Blood and TC (408), Colin Spencer and Crystal Cummins-Beckles (407.5), Sheldon Hope (400.5), and Tassa (369).

Congrats to the Mighty Gabby. He remains the true calypso king of Barbados and is one of the very few that can claim to be a genuine calypso/kaiso maestro.

Dear Pubic,
I watched the Pic-O-De-Crop finals last night into the early hours of this morning in order to see and hear what Barbados’ calypso champions could muster up this year. I was impressed to see a mixture of new faces along the lines of Tassa and Crystal Cummin-Beckles and the ‘Big shots’ such as Red Plastic Bag and Blood. But i was completely shocked and disappointed when the positions were announced. Starting with Tassa earning 10th position followed by Blood tying with TC for 5th and then by the final blow of Gabby taking home the title, money and car. I have personally never seen such in my life. Now i don’t want to leave this as an insult to the Mighty Gabby because i do believe that he is an excellent calypsonian and has inspired many with his musics, but last night was not his night to win!

First you gave Jahovah your blessings for bringing this far and thanks to all others for their support.

This decision puts Rita’s to shame. The mantra heard all last night on your sister media outlet( Dis is a singing competition)says all one needs to know.Perhaps the foresight of the kid may lead John King in a similar direction, all to the detriment of the art-form.

Congratulations Gabby, Sir. You have taught me much about the art form but you still owe us more.
Writing for others is honorable and just but it should not be done at the expense of completing the construction of your Castle, your published work, and your life purpose.
God has given you a gift. Mango dat ripe ‘pon tree always sweeter than one dat force ripe in plastic bag.
Prediction:
Thanks for bringing Back RPB next year.

I am truly happy for Gabby. You are a TRUE calypsonian. You are extremely versitile. You do not repeat melodies nor masscarade church songs for calypso like two other popular calypsonians. However, you were lucky this year to be chosen as King. Your calypsoes transcended the parameters of Crop over. I know many love you, but “Ole Ashe”; like “calypso” was too historical and academic ie ‘over the head’for many to understand.I think you need to write good Barbadian social commentaries, like you did in the past so that all and sundry can appreciate your mastery and true craftmanship of the artform. Haiti was masterful.

As a young person I look up to both Gabby and RPB so much, I love them both.  I wish RPB had won because I loved his songs and the crowd response that night for him was crazy but I am not upset that Gabby won.

I also think TC’s song Out of Control was absolutely stellar, fitting for today’s times and sung like a true performer!!  Pic-O-De-Crop is definitely her thing.

Congrats Gabby.  You deserve to win. You are a versatile person. Keep the art form alive.
Don’t mind the critics. If RPB sing Baa, Baa Black sheep they waving bags and flags and think he should win.

You are class unmatched.
