Hockey men win bronze

Sun, August 01, 2010 - 12:00 AM

BARBADOS have finished their Central American and Caribbean Games campaign in the same vein they started it – winning a medal.

The men’s hockey contingent followed the lead of their female counterparts after blanking the Netherlands Antilles 3-0 in yesterday’s bronze medal match in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

It was the country’s second bronze in as many days and fifth overall at these games following the women’s 3-1 victory over the Dominican Republic on Friday, closing Barbados’ medal tally at ten – three gold, two silver and five bronze.

Dario Jordan and Neil Franklyn opened the proceedings with first-half field goals before Rohan Thomas provided the final goal on the other side of the break.

The third-place finish was the first time that the men’s hockey team medalled at this level since losing the gold medal game back in 2002.

Veteran swimmer Nicky Neckles opened Barbados’ account on the opening day of this year’s games with silver in the men’s 100 metre backstroke before Bradley Ally highlighted these championships by capturing both the 200 and 400 metres individual medley just days after.

However, the ten medals fall well short of Barbados’ 2006 tally of 19. (JM)
