Hundreds of St Philip folk came out in support of nine-time monarch Red Plastic Bag when he was honoured at a soca beach party at Skeete’s Bay yesterday.
Red was the colour of the Digicel-sponsored event, that attracted a line-up that included Blood, Mikey, Adrian Clarke, Edwin Yearwood and Khiomal.
Even those walking with canes, babies in arms and prams turned out to celebrate the calypsonian, who placed third in this year’s Pic-O-De-Crop competition.
Lashley’s idea
Spokesperson for the event, Hallam Gittens, said the tribute was the brainchild of Member of Parliament for the constituency, Michael Lashley, who felt that due to Bag’s success over the years, he should be given some deserving honour.
The event brought together various organisations within the St Philip community.
Among those attending was Minister of Culture Steve Blackett, who told the NATION it was commendable that a community could come together and host such an event for a “son of the soil”.
“Any tribute paid to the RPB is good, whether parochial or national, and would also be welcomed because he has brought lots of credit to Barbados and is truly a cultural ambassador,” he said.
Bag, meanwhile, said he truly appreciated the honour, especially “right in my hometown”.
“You couldn’t want it better than this,” he added. (CT)

Comment LinkRPB please don’t take my comments personally. Mr Lashley, was this celebration really neccessary? There was a contest and RPB came in third. Let’s reward RPB again next year if he loses. Better yet Mr Lashley ansd Mr Blackett, we will throw the DLP a party when they loose the next election. And, please stop calling everyone an ambassador.
