Students off to Canada

Nine students from the Barbados Community College (BCC) will be heading off to Canadian universities in an inaugural exchange programme.Speaking at a short Press conference on Friday where students received the scholarships from Minister of Education Ronald Jones, college principal Gladstone Best urged the students to do their best and use the opportunity to learn about different cultures while enjoying the experience. Jones congratulated the scholars and urged them to do their best at their respective schools. “You are ambassadors for Barbados; frontline persons for Barbados’ tourism product and for the export of Barbadiana,” he said. Jones also counselled students to remain focused on their studies and not get sidetracked.Seven of the scholarship winners will be going to Lambton College in London, Ontario. They are Nikita Archer, Daniel Boyce, Adrian Brandon and Rohan Morris, who will pursue computer studies, as well as Shanice Batson, Zanisa Finlay and Ashley Tull, who will focus on culinary arts.  Jon Bend is to attend St Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario, where he is expected to pursue studies in fine arts, and Ajene Worrell will be continuing his studies at the University of Winnipeg. The scholarships were provided by the Emerging Leaders Of The Americas Programme and the Canada-Caricom scholarship programme offered by the Canadian Bureau for International Education.A student from the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic was also awarded. Aaron Miller, who is studying network technologies, will be heading to the Nova Scotia Community College in Eastern Canada. (CT)
