A new man

A new man Raul Garcia. (FP)

Sun, October 07, 2012 - 12:09 AM

Convicted cocaine smuggler Raul Garcia says he is “a completely redeemed man” who wants to help Barbados’ young people avoid the pitfalls of drugs.

He also maintains he is not a threat to Barbados and is more than able to support himself if permitted to live here.

Garcia, who was responding to questions submitted by the SUNDAY SUN through his attorney David Comissiong, said he had learnt a number of lessons after spending nearly 20 years in prison.

“After witnessing so many young people in prison with drug addiction, I have learnt how the drug trade is really doing a lot of damage, particularly to young people,” the 58-year-old said. (BW)

I think that Mr. Garcia still has a lot of questions to answer (and yes he owes those answers to the Barbadian public), if he really wants to prove hat he is a "redeemed" man. First, he could start by explaining how he could fully support himself and not be a burden to Barbadian taxpayers. Second, did he legally earn the money and resources with which he plans to support himself, and where will it come from? Third, what exactly does he plan to do to help those young people that are struggling with addition and falling into situations which put him in the predicament that he has placed himself? And fourth, how is he no longer a threat to Barbadian society? We need to see these answers in "his own words."

@frank husbands ..where is his home? I take it you are a citizen of the united states/canada, when you swore to become a citizen of that country, didn't you denounce your citizenship of your country? Don't get this twisted. barbados did not denounce you, but you did..thank god for that. anyhow do you think that every country should/must do what barbados does?

@ nesta marley!!! when you take US Citizenship, yes you must give up the one you are holding, but please don't confuse the USA with Canada it's a different ball game you don't have to Give up your Bajan Citizenship to become a Canadian, i LEGALLY Carry a Canadian and a Barbadian Passport (Dual Citizenship) the Canadian Passport i only got it so that i could go see my sister in Brooklyn and this was only since 911. i have travelled back and forth to Barbados on my Bajan Passport and also through Europe (Britain and Holland) no Problem. Canada and France has that same agreement

i knew you would respond and i comtemplated the response, however i did not question your /our right to dual citizenship.matter of fact i highlighted the fact, that even after we swear that we would put another country before barbados, barbados does not put a country before our people, its the motivation behind me being a resident and not a citizen of either foriegn country, both of which i meet the critera to become a citizen. You stil did not address the fact that CUBA is not his home.USA is not his home, WHERE IS HIS HOME? his last address was DODDS ST. PHILLIP.he was sentenced by a barbadian court of law, he served his sentence.and now he is a free man, yet he is being held /detained. that is unconstitutional.
