Abrahams: Lifeguards a must

Government is being asked to ensure that beaches across Barbados are fully manned with the suitable number of lifeguards.

The appeal is coming from Barbados Labour Party Senator Wilfred Abrahams in a press release as he protested the absence of lifeguards at beaches across the island and in light of 18-year-old Shaquille Denny losing his life at Crane Beach, St Philip last week Thursday.

“The Government has been consistently warned that public sector cuts could not and should not be made in a haphazard way.  The retrenching of 28 lifeguards earlier this year was publicly denounced by the Barbados Labour Party, tourism officials and members of the public,” said Abrahams.

He said there were some departments where wholesale cuts could not be made without dire or even fatal consequences. (PR/JS)
