Last night the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium was transformed into an arena where rock met pop and Afrocentric music.
Billed as an Air Supply concert, the spotlight was almost stolen by local acts NexCyx with a hardcore performance of Prince’s Purple Rain, a tribute to Michael Jackson, their own singles and the cover version of Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jagger that saw them winning an international contest.
Their set saw the visiting band backing Air Supply out on the floor taking in a tremendous performance. Diva Tamara Marshall delivered her originals with a beautiful voice that was completed by her funky attire. Marissa Lindsay also put down a solid performance.
The crowning moment was the triple treat of NexCyx’s lead singer Mahalia, Marshall and Lindsay delivering Patti LaBelle’s Lady Marmalade as a fitting ending to their two hours on stage.
Then it was time for Air Supply who delivered their popular hits like Even the Nights are Better, Just As I Am, Every Woman in the World and Here I Am.
Air Supply was backed by four solid musicians – a keyboardist, guitarist, bass player and drummer, who added quite a bit of muscle to the duo’s normally lite fare.
The band played a few new songs, including Dance With Me, the most up-tempo track of the night, but they mostly stuck to the hits.
Exiting the stage they returned to perform Goodnight, a fitting end to a good show.
