Barbadian Akela Jones has made an impressive start to the opening of the 2014 United States college track and field season.
The six-foot high jumper won the women’s high jump at the OBU Invitational meet in Oklahoma with a leap of 1.86 metres for her Oklahoma Baptist college team.
The jump equalled a personal best.
Jones’ performance was nine centimetres better than that of second-placed college mate Kenney Meigs who leapt 1.67 as Oklahoma ruled six of the first seven positions.
Only a third-place finish by Markie Abbott of Northwood Texas disrupted the hosts’ total domination of the top spots.
Among the many goals Jones has set for the new season is reaching of the two-metre mark. (KB)
