AQUACULTURE IS an industry that could do well in Barbados if given a greater level of attention from key players in the agriculture industry.
This is the belief of Timothy Walsh, managing director of Nature’s Produce and owner of The Farm at The Farm Plantation in St Peter, who noted that he was about to start producing more fish and crayfish for local consumption.
The long-time farmer said he believed aquafarming was an area that needed to be expanded, even as fishermen complain about low catches at sea. Walsh said he was already taking steps to encourage and facilitate the development of that type of farming on the island.
“Aquaculture is happening in Barbados and the product is good. This product can go all over and is going to compete with shrimp, which is imported. It is everything the customers are looking for. So it is very important that it [be] sustained and kept in a format [where] it is not affected in any detrimental manner,” he said, and that in 2010 about 50 per cent of world’s fish came from aquaculture.
